Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the number of employment gains added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release when the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
