The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Major Alliance Forged By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's older political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Consultations Taking Place

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several major political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
