Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.
Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Athletes will gain the ability to question specific decisions made by the chair umpire, following the protocol already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This development follows just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review other decisions, including:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can request.
Practical Application
An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.
In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
