Toto Wolff is in advanced talks to sell a portion of his ownership stake in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

This transaction estimates the Mercedes team at £4.6 billion – a record for a Formula 1 squad – after McLaren were valued at £3.5bn in an adjustment to ownership structure in September.

The Austrian executive, who owns one-third of the Mercedes F1 operation, would sell a stake approximately 5%.

Wolff, aged 53 would stay on as team boss and CEO if the sale goes through.

Ownership Breakdown

Remaining partners in the team are Mercedes-Benz and industrial group Ineos, who each also own a third of the company.

A Mercedes spokesperson said: "We will be making no comment on the matter. The management structure of the team stays unaltered, and all three partners are dedicated to continued achievements of Mercedes-Benz in F1."

Financial Growth

This arrangement signifies a substantial rise in value of the Mercedes team after Ineos Group acquired its share for £208 million in 2022.

The rise demonstrates the expansion in market values of F1 teams recently as a consequence of the increasing appeal of the sport globally.

This was also seen in the success of the Formula 1 film starring Brad Pitt, which was released last summer and earned more than $630 million (£458m) at cinemas worldwide.

The film represents Pitt's most successful movie and the most successful sports film to date.

Current Standings

The Mercedes team are runner-up in the team standings, behind McLaren, with three races left this season.

Mercedes' primary racer British driver George Russell has secured victory in two of the 21 grands prix so far and is in fourth place in the drivers' championship after McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

The team won a record eight straight team titles and seven driver championships, six for Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, from 2014 and 2021.
